GOLD AND ENAMEL REPEATING FRENCH CYLINDER POCKET WATCH – 1780

This is a magnificent late 18th Century French quarter repeating cylinder watch, housed in an equally stunning diamond set gold and enamel consular case. The watch features a full plate gilt fusee movement, with a finely pierced and engraved bridge cock, a plain three arm gilt balance with a blue steel spiral hairspring, silver regulator dial with blue steel indicator, and round pillars. The watch can be wound through the white enamel dial, which boasts black Arabic numerals and red numerals at the quarters, as well as gold beetle and poker hands. The unique push pendant a toc quarter repeating mechanism is located on two blocks set in the case and adds a bit of luxury to this already exquisite timepiece. The polished steel cylinder and large brass escape wheel are indicative of the high level of craftsmanship this timepiece exudes. The watch features a three colour gold consular case with a fully restored circular polychrome enamel portrait of a young lady on the back. Surrounding the portrait is a band of applied gold work set with diamonds and green enamel. The case also has a sprung front bezel opened by pressing a pin recessed in the edge, and a gold push pendant and bow. This watch is a true masterpiece and is worthy of any collector's attention. It is signed "Mandion a Paris" and dates back to around 1780, with a diameter of 42 mm and a depth of 9 mm.
