The Rockford Watch Company was one of the first watch factories in America, establishing itself in the 1870s. Located near the Rock River, about 100 miles from Chicago, the company heavily advertised its products in communities served by three different railroads. This proved to be a successful strategy, as many railway engineers purchased their watches. However, financial difficulties led to the company's reorganization in 1896 and ultimate closure in 1915. Interestingly, part of the factory was later incorporated into the structure of Rockford High School.

This particular pocket watch from Rockford Watch Company dates back to 1886 and features an open-faced design with a gold-filled case. The kiln-fired enamel dial boasts Roman numerals and is paired with blued steel hands. The watch operates through a manual winding, 15-jewel full plate movement, which was a relatively advanced feature for the time. At 55mm in diameter, this timepiece is a beautiful example of the craftsmanship and technological advancements of the late 19th century.
