This 18K yellow gold Waltham Presidential Presentation Model 1872 pocket watch is a stunning piece of history. It has a manual winding mechanism with 15 jewels, and it features a stem wind lever set and a white enamel dial. The case measures 54mm and has an original HC with the initials "M.W.K" on the front shield, as well as a gold cuvette with an engraving.

What makes this watch even more special is the engraving on the back, which reads: "Presented by the President of the United States to Captain Miles Kirkpatrick of the British Steamer West Cumberland, for his humanity and bravery displayed in effecting the rescue of the crew and passengers of the American Schooner Millie G. Bowne, Dec. 22 - 1889." This is a remarkable tribute to the selfless actions of Captain Kirkpatrick, as well as a testament to the high regard in which he was held by the President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison.

The story behind this Presidential presentation is a fascinating one, and it was chronicled in an article titled "Rescued and at Home," which appeared in the January 3rd, 1890 issue of "The Boston Globe." It is a riveting account of the bravery and ingenuity that led to the successful rescue of the crew and passengers of the Millie G. Bowne, and it serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of courage and selflessness in the face of adversity. Overall, this Waltham pocket watch is a rare and collectible piece of history, with a rich and inspiring backstory that makes it all the more valuable.
